Head and Face: 3/4 View

Today I'm giving you the basic drawing tutorial for (still head and face) 3/4 view. This view is drawn most often in your sketch or comic. If you are getting used to draw head and face from front and side view, I bet this technique will not turn into problem for you because basically it is the "fusion" of the other two views.

To start off the tutorial, I will begin by making a so-called circle. This time the vertical line which states the direction of the head's view is slightly modified by shifting its position a little bit to the left (or right - in accordance with the viewpoint that want to be drawn) and make it slightly curved.

Basic Stages in the Process of making Comics

One day, a friend of mine asked me about the stages we should do during the comic process. So I gave her the steps:

1. Pencil. hand drawing remains on top of all. Though we can use pen tablet to draw an image, drawing on a computer just cannot beat out the flexibility and details of direct hand drawing on the paper.

2. Ink. Ink is used to make the outline of the pencil sketch so we can see the image clearer and will be easier to be scanned. In the United States comic industries, this inking process are even conducted by particular people which are called the Inker. But with the good quality of the scanner nowadays, many people choose to directly scan their artworks and control the sharpness level of the lines using software editors like Adobe Photoshop or Corel Draw.

Head and Face: Side View

Let's go on to the next tutorial. Now, we are going to draw (still) head and face from a different angle, which is the side view.

Head and Face: Front View

I've made up a manga character face. By following the tutorial, I hope in the end you can make a better character (hohohoo..), because this tutorial is intended as a guide for you to develop your own drawing style. Okay, let's just begin the first lesson.
